A long overdue sequel? Or.. the start of a whole new series? Maybe it’s a little bit of both! However you look at it, one thing remains true! Yoshi’s Island is one of the most advanced Super NES games out there and stands as the last great 16-Bit game ever made! With Mario as Nintendo’s flagship character, there was never a moment where the “next” game in the series wasn’t being thought about or worked on. Soon after Super Mario World, his new side kick, Yoshi, began to appear in spin offs. The puzzle games Yoshi’s Egg and Yoshi’s Cookie raised the Dino’s profile, along with a spot in Super Mario Kart - the first game after Mario World that placed Our Hero in new situations that often filled the gaps between mainline releases. Proper work on the sequel to Super Mario World began in 1992, not long after the Super NES was available worldwide. Shigeru Miyamoto, the father of Mario, would once again serve as producer. He delegated authority to Shigefumi Hino, the man who created the final design of Yoshi. Takashi Tezuka, often Miyamoto’s right hand man was also on board, along with others from the core Super Mario World team including composer Koji Kondo. Shigefumi Hino hit several walls while drafting up the basis for this new game. He felt that everything that was possible with Mario in a 2D action game had already been done before: Mario running, jumping and flying would just be a repeat of past games, which might tarnish the image of the series. It was also his opinion that Yoshi, should be the focus of the game. This ideas moved development into a direction that might not be Mario as we know it.
