Elias Mamari, (Mah-MAHR'-ee) 19, works at a Allentown, Pennsylvania restaurant while going to college. He's worried about his friends and family in Homs and Aleppo, Syria, where residents are continuing to feel aftershocks. On Monday, Mamari called his father, Bassam, who was in Homs, Syria, to check on his family following the quake. Bassam Mamari is an Orthodox priest who has been sheltering with his flock at the church in Homs. He told his son there was a lot of damage and the conditions were worsening. It's cold, there is no power, the internet is down and food and medicine were scarce. Thousands of miles away, Elias Mamari said he feels powerless to help. In an interview at St. George's Church in Allentown, where nearly all of the parishioners have roots in Syria, the only thing he can do is pray. "I cannot do anything from here to help them," he said. "But I think I can pray for them to God help them." Rev. Meletios Zafaran, (Meh-LAY'-tee-ohs ZAH-fah-rahn), the pastor of St. George Church in Allentown, said more than 95% of parishioners were origInally from Syria.
