The Qing Dynasty (1644–1912) was the last imperial dynasty of China, ruling for nearly three centuries. It was established by the Manchus, a semi-nomadic people from northeast China, who overthrew the Ming Dynasty and consolidated their power across China. The early Qing emperors, particularly Kangxi (r. 1661–1722) and Qianlong (r. 1735–1796), expanded the empire’s borders to include Taiwan, Tibet, Xinjiang, and Mongolia, making it one of the largest empires in Chinese history. Under the Qing, China experienced significant economic growth, population expansion, and cultural flourishing. The dynasty maintained a complex bureaucracy based on Confucian principles, with a civil service examination system that allowed educated men to enter government service.
