U.S. President Joe Biden's Tuesday attempt to call out racist remarks by a speaker at a campaign rally for presidential candidate Donald Trump backfired, when Trump and other Republicans accused him of calling their supporters "garbage." Biden made the remarks during a Tuesday fundraising Zoom call with Voto Latino, an organization that encourages young Latino Americans to register to vote. The White House said he was responding to “hateful rhetoric” by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who called Puerto Rico a "floating island of garbage" at Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally in New York on Sunday. On Wednesday, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris vowed to serve "all Americans" if elected president when asked about the remark by Biden. Trump accused Biden and Harris of finally saying what they “really think” of Trump’s supporters, while Trump supporters at a North Carolina rally expressed outrage at the remarks. “So our president thinks about half of America like this? We're not garbage, we're not trash. We're the American people,” North Carolina Trump supporter Heather Johnson said.
