What is the difference between the United Kingdom, Great Britain, and the British Isles? This is something that confuses a lot of people. In this video, we explain exactly what each term means. The UK is short for The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is a sovereign state, just like the USA, but is made up of four countries; England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. For Americans, the best analogy would be that the UK is like the USA, and its four countries are like the states of the USA. Great Britain is a combination of England, Scotland, and Wales, as well as their smaller offshore islands. It does not include Northern Ireland. The British Isles consist of the islands of Great Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Inner and Outer Hebrides, the Northern Isles, and over six thousand smaller islands.
