New Zealand MPs staged a powerful haka during a vote on a contentious Indigenous bill, which brought Parliament to a halt on Thursday. Opposition party MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke began the haka after she was asked whether her party supported the new Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi Bill, which seeks to reinterpret the country’s founding treaty with the Māori people. The Te Pāti Māori MP also ripped up a copy of the bill before her party colleagues faced the coalition and stood to perform alongside her. According to local media, the Speaker of Parliament ordered security to clear the public gallery. Parliament was briefly suspended as a result.
