India’s forest area has increased by 5,188 square km in the last two years, as per Forest Survey of India report 2019. The report says that this green area covers about 25% of the total geographic area of the country. Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala are the three states where forest area has grown the most. However there are some facts which are worrisome. There are three categories of forests- Very Dense Forests (VDFs) Moderately Dense Forests (MDGs) and Open Forests (OFs) Even though the area under OFs increased by 5.7%, VDFs increased by a mere 1.14%. On the other hand moderately dense forests decreased by 3%. Northeast lost around 18% of forests in the last 10 years. Except for Assam and Tripura, all the states in the Northeast show a decrease in forest cover. The figures show that India still needs to have a uniform and sustainable growth of forests. Apart from this, the report also stated about Mangroves – trees that are found in saltwater or semi-saltwater. Mangroves have increased in coastal areas. It has increased in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Odisha. The total mangrove area is recorded to be 4975 square kilometers.
