In a historic diplomatic move, U.S. President Donald Trump will host Syria’s interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa in Washington later this month marking the first visit by a Syrian president to the U.S. capital in over eight decades. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani confirmed the visit, calling it a step toward a “new chapter” in U.S.–Syria relations. The agenda reportedly includes lifting sanctions and forming an alliance against ISIL.
