More than ever before in our society we are experiencing difficult emotional states like sadness, fear, anxiety, frustration, and overwhelm. Though these are only labels, created by our limited language to define a wide range of emotions and feelings that differs from each individual and with each unique situation. Overall, these states are ones that we associate with discomfort and pain and many of us (all of us) have created strategies for coping with these states. Some of which are very healthy, like going for a walk in the sunshine when you feel overwhelmed and anxious or calling a close friend when you feel down. Others, like overworking, overeating, or overconsuming stimulants/depressants like caffeine and alcohol, are no longer supporting us and are leftover residue from habits we acquired during stressful times in our lives like the pandemic at its height or an unsettling breakup.
