Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind (2004) is one of if not my favourite film of all time. It ties together feelings of sheer despair and blissful hope as if they aren’t the complete opposite of each other. What makes me love this film so much is that the entire meaning of it changes depending on the outlook you have. I know many people watched this film and saw a heartbreaking story about a man desperately clinging onto a love he has already lost. However, I feel the film leaves us open for a feeling of hope at the very end. The idea that Joel and Clem may have just found the solution to the problem that has plagued their relationship over and over again. By discovering the newly revealed company tapes in which they both talk about everything they will eventually grow to hate about each other they have unwittingly communicated with one another about the problems that they have in the relationship, something they could never seem to do as we view more and more of their relationship during the film. And with this problem potentially solved, I feel Joel and Clem may be able to live their lives together after all. Of course it’s all based on whether or not you want to see it that way, that is what makes this film great.
