It's Dental Health Week! Let's talk about 🦈 'shark teeth'. Shark Teeth is a term for when permanent adult teeth emerge behind baby teeth that have yet to fall out, resulting in a double row of teeth. It usually occurs between the ages of 5 and 7 years, commonly affecting the lower incisors (bottom front teeth), but it can also happen with the upper incisors or primary molars. Usually, as adult teeth erupt through the gums, they encourage the roots of the baby teeth to dissolve. In the case of 'shark teeth', the roots have not dissolved quickly enough, resulting in two rows of teeth. Should I be concerned? Typically, the adult teeth will naturally replace the baby teeth over time, and no treatment is necessary. Encourage your child to wiggle the baby tooth daily with their finger or tongue to loosen it and avoid discomfort while eating. However, if the adult teeth are almost the same height as the baby teeth and there is still limited movement, or if the area becomes sore, irritated, or inflamed, it's time to book a trip to the dentist for a review!
