Also known as the city of the students or the university city. It is located just 25 kilometers east of Brussels. Leuven is the capital and largest city of the province of Flemish Brabant, Flanders. It is the eighth largest city in Belgium, with more than 100,000 inhabitants. Seen from above, Leuven has a circular city center, the Grand Market with St. Peter's Church and the famous Leuven Town Hall. The current church building and town hall date from the 15th century. Leuven is a historically rich city with many religious and secular buildings and places of interest. Home to the largest university in the Low Countries, KU Leuven, founded in 1425, making it the oldest surviving Catholic university in the world. More than 65,000 students enroll each year, 21% of which are international students. The world's largest beer brewer, AB InBev (over 170,000 employees), has its head office in Leuven. Many international companies have research-oriented offices in Leuven. Leuven has strict limits for car traffic in the city center, making it a pedestrian and bicycle friendly city. Ironically, Leuven has a rich beer culture (favorite drink of students?) the birthplace of several beers such as Stella Artois. Bars, shops, fast food and restaurants can be found on almost every street corner, including a bar that offers more than 3000 different beers. Numerous notable people were either born or spent time in Leuven, just to name a few, Gerardus Mercator (1512-1594), known for creating the 1569 world map, Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536), a great scholar of the Northern Renaissance and Marie of Brabant, Queen of France from 1274 to 1285.
