Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is often overlooked despite being one of the major threats to American health, alongside stroke and heart disease. These three conditions are like the Three Musketeers of vascular disease, each affecting different parts of the body but all leading to severe consequences. Most people are familiar with strokes and heart attacks because they are dramatic, life-threatening events that typically lead to a 911 call and an emergency hospital visit. However, PAD remains relatively unknown, with up to 70% of Americans unaware of its existence and implications. PAD occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries of the legs, restricting blood flow to the extremities. This may sound minor, but the consequences can be dire. Without adequate blood flow, the tissues in the feet and legs can die, leading to ulcers, infections, and ultimately, amputations. Alarmingly, about 50% of PAD patients who undergo amputation do not survive more than a few years post-surgery. Understanding PAD is crucial for early detection and management, potentially saving lives and preventing the severe complications associated with this silent yet deadly condition.
