Romania is a gem for adventure tourism and the infamous Transfagarasan Road is its cherry on the cake. Therefore we try to make it easy for you to book your next trip to Romania and tell you how to get there, what to do there and how to get around: ❄️ The road is closed during the winter months so check the web if it’s open during your planned visit. 🚎 There’s no public transport across the pass, but hitchhiking works wonderfully with the friendly Romanian people if you don’t have a car. 🐻 The road is the easiest way to see wild bears in Europe and you might even get lucky and see cubs! Don’t feed them and stay in the car. ⚠️ Drive carefully as people stop anywhere on the road to get a shot of a bear! 🔄 You can start in Sibiu and cross North-South or go the other way starting in Curtea de Arges which is what we did. 🌭 There are vendors along the road selling bear, deer and wolf sausages which might be interesting to you and a cool way to support locals! 🏔 On top of the pass there’s a beautiful lake and the trailhead of tons of hikes to some of Romania‘s highest mountains. Make sure to bring your bad weather gear as it’s usually 20-30°C colder up there than in the city. 💤 It is perfect for a day trip, but there’s a hut on top and some hotels along the way if you want to give this magical place some more time. - We found it to be one of the most beautiful roads in Europe which frankly surprised us. (after hitchhiking through Switzerland we thought that it’ll be hard to impress us with beautiful scenery) - Make sure not to miss out on it, on your next trip in Eastern Europe! - Have you ever heard of that road before? 🇷🇴 - Safe travels yours Berni & Alex - Follow @hitchhikingdiary for more low budget travel inspo around the world!
