Elon Musk is threatening to sue Mark Zuckerberg. On Wednesday, Meta launched Threads - an app openly billed by Zuckerberg as a rival to Twitter. The app received a tremendous response, with over 30 million signups in less than 24 hours, making it the fastest downloaded app ever. Signing up for Threads is seamless as accounts are linked to Instagram profiles. Then, Twitter, in a cease-and-desist letter to Zuckerberg, expressed serious concerns about Meta Platforms engaging in the systematic, willful, and unlawful misappropriation of Twitter's trade secrets and intellectual property. Twitter claims that Meta has hired numerous former employees in the past year who had access to Twitter's confidential information, with some improperly retaining documents or electronic devices. But, Meta's communication director insists that there are no engineers on their team who previously worked at Twitter. The threat of a lawsuit over trade secret appropriation is not without precedent or consequence in the tech industry. In 2018, Google-owned self-driving car company Waymo sued Uber for stealing trade secrets, resulting in a $245 million settlement. The employee involved, Anthony Levandowski, faced theft charges but was later pardoned by Donald Trump.
