I. Introduction (45 seconds) A. There have been just over 3.5 trillion photographs taken since the very first one in 1827. B. Most people would take this for granted, but there's a lot of behind the scenes action that goes into photography. C. I have personal experience with this because I am a photographer and have been through the whole process. D. Main Points 1. Education requirements 2. Job outlook 3. Venues/Equipment E. Ok let's now take a look at our first main point of education requirements. II. Education Requirements (90 seconds) A. Degree -- Degree is not required but is seen as an advantage when looking for new clients. I did my research through the CCC website and they offer an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Media Arts Photography. B. Classes -- According to cccneb.edu, you must complete 62-63 credits to earn the degree. Required classes include classes like: Media Writing, Visual Design, Web Page I & II, and Photography. You also must take some Gen Eds in Communication, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Life and Career Skills, Information and Technology Literacy, and Global Awareness. C. Certification -- You don't have to become certified to be considered a professional photographer, but it looks better to potential clients. You can become certified through the Professional Photographers of America. According to ppa.com becoming certified can give you and advertising edge, justify your pricing, and give your peer-validation. III. Job Outlook (90 seconds) A. Need -- Photography is a career that will never die out. People are very visual, we like to see everything. We photograph everything from the birth of our children to devastating events that happen all over the world. We would not know or remember what events and people look like without photography. B. Growth -- According to Bureau of Labor Statistics the job outlook for photographers is expected to grow by 4% between 2012-2022. Salaried jobs can be harder to find as most companies seem to contract with freelance photographers rather than hire some. C. Different Areas -- There are many different areas of photography. Popular ones include: portrait, news and sports, and photojournalism. Portrait photographers usual work in studios and take family, senior, new born, engagement, and wedding portraits. News and sports photographers usually work for newspapers or magazines and take picture of world and sports events. Photojournalists are similar to news and sports photographers but tell stories in a different way. They capture stories and put them together in a way that can touch our hearts. IV. Venues/Equipment (90 seconds) A. Outdoor venue -- When doing an outdoor event you'll need some glare reducing equipment, a high shutter speed lens, and you'll want to do the event in the morning or later in the evening when the sun isn't highest in the sky. A big advantage of doing outdoor events is that you won't have to bring lighting equipment and natural lighting is much more flattering; you also won't need backgrounds or props. B. Indoor venue -- When doing an indoor event you'll need lighting, maybe some props of backgrounds and a low shutter speed lens. C. Action venue -- If you're doing an action event such as news or sports, you will need a high shutter speed lens, a continuous shoot function, and sometimes a stand or tripod. V. Conclusion (45 seconds) A. All in all, photography is very important to our society and culture; it gives us news and art and helps us cherish our memories. B. If you want to become a photographer I highly recommend taking classes through CCC. The job outlook for photography is on the rise. Equipment and venue go hand in hand and are always important. C. So, the next time you get your picture taken, remember there's a lot more that goes into it than you think. References Bellis, M. (2014, May 16). History of Photography and the Camera.
