IFOR troops arriving in Markovici, Eastern Bosnia. This is the school that house the weapons and arms. IFOR troops have now been allowed to inspect the dump after a tense standoff with the Bosnian Serbs. This is not the first time this has happened. Bosnian Serbs blocked a NATO inspection team from looking at a weapons storage site near their headquarters in Han Pijesak last week. Sources say the material in the school building includes rockets, packets of TNT, small arms ammunition and about 5 thousand 700 cases of anti-tank and anti-personnel mines. NATO commander in Bosnia General Michael Walker said that they were preparing to destroy the ammunition soon. He wants to make sure the school can be used again for its proper purpose. SOUNDBITE: (Q)"Would you give us some idea of what you discussed today?" (A)"We've been discussing matters compliance with the Dayton covering a number of areas." (Q)"You've touched on the ammunition depot issue?" (A)" We did yes." (Q)"And what were the conclusions?" (A)"The conclusion is that we are going to continue to conduct the work that we are doing at the moment to safely destroy the ammunition. To do it in an area where it will have minimum impact on the population and to make sure that what was a school can be returned to its proper purpose and that the ammunition that is not needed , ammunition that is currently in a dangerous condition and situation is removed from where it is." SUPER CAPTION: NATO commander in Bosnia General Michael Walker Although the status and future of the Markovici ammunitions dump appears to have been resolved, NATO still has to consider what to do with other sites.
