Back in 1962, Chevrolet launched the second veneration (c2) of the Corvette as a 1963 model, called the Sting Ray. And it was with the C2 Corvette that Zora Arkus-Duntov and his team of engineers really started ratcheting up the Corvette's performance. His goal was to have the Corvette leading the field in terms of performance both on and off the track. The 1963 model had an independent rear suspension (IRS), and by 1965 the C2 had four-wheel disc brakes. The Corvette was the hottest sports car of the time, but Zora had plans to make it even better. Zora knew people would want to race the new Corvette, so a Z06 package was offered for 1963 only (at a hefty $1,818 price tag that required the $430 L84 327 V-8 option) which effectively created a race-ready Vette. Only 199 Z06 Corvettes were built in 1963, with just 63 of them having the big-tank option. #chevrolet #chevroletcorvette #auto #news #cars
