Indian Economic Updates : Steel Quality Norms Strengthened by India to Tackle Low-Grade Imports The government is likely to tighten quality norms amid a surge in substandard steel imports, particularly from China. A review conducted by the steel ministry in October highlighted growing concerns over trade diversions that are increasing the vulnerability of India’s steel industry. In the first five months of the current fiscal year, steel imports stood at 3.45 million tonnes, while exports totaled 1.92 million tonnes. To address the issue, the government plans to expand quality control orders, limiting imports of steel grades not manufactured domestically. Currently, India imports around ₹4,200 crore worth of steel each year that does not comply with Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms. #steelindustry #importexport #steelmanufacturing #indianeconomicnews #indiagrowth #manufacturing
