India and China claim vast swathes of each other's territory along their Himalayan border. It erupted in a deadly war in 1962. And although a truce is in place with a “Line of Actual Control,” the border remains disputed. On June 15th, tensions along the border turned violent for the first time in over half a century. India says at least 20 of its soldiers were killed after hand-to-hand fighting with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley. China has not released any information on casualties. India and China traded accusations that the other had violated their shared de facto border. But analysts say the violence speaks to a bigger geopolitical issue. Emanuela Campanella explains.
