Here are four little-known (and seldom discussed) facts about NPD, according to the DSM-5-TR, published in 2022: 1. To be diagnosed with NPD, an individual needs to meet 5 of the 9 criteria listed in the DSM-5-TR. ONE of those criteria is low empathy. this means it is possible to be diagnosed without meeting that criteria. 2. NPD is correlated with suicide and depression. 3. Many people assume that all narcissists are men. According to the DSM-5-TR, up to 50% of individuals diagnosed with NPD identify as female. 4. According to the DSM-5-TR, "Low self-esteem with inferiority, vulnerability, and sustained feelings of shame, envy, and humiliation accompanied by self-criticism and insecurity can make individuals with narcissistic personality disorder susceptible to social withdrawal, emptiness, and depressed mood."
