Elegance is Timeless. This phrase, more than any other, seems most apt to sum up this year's Dior catwalk. A pure, unapologetic homage to the original 1950s House of Dior as worn by Dietrich and the Duchess of Windsor. Full, almost floor length skirts, tight bodices, tiny waists, simple necklines on dresses, berets, a rainbow of coloured satin and silk brocade, velvet chokers and pearls. Of course Dior was not the only couture house to be creating such exquisitely graceful visual images. The recent movie Phantom Thread portrayed "the beautifully realised tale of British 1950s haute couture" which followed the period when ladies sartorialism was, perhaps, at its most sublime. In the words of one of its critics "Phantom Thread is practically a love letter to classic aesthetic values—cinematic, sartorial, or otherwise." In essence summing up the best of the 1950s. The background music is House of Woodcock by Jonny Greenwood from The Phantom Thread soundtrack. There are short extracts from No Highway in the Sky (1951), stock British Pathe footage and Phantom Thread (2017).
