Maehara, who is in the country for a series of meetings, is due to meet with Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard later on Tuesday. He is also due to meet his Australian counterpart Australian Foreign Minister, Kevin Rudd later in the day. Prior to his arrival Maehara said the main topic of his trip to Australia would be to discuss how to revive the stalled bilateral talks on a free trade agreement. Maehara said he planned to talk about Tokyo's interest in trans-Pacific multilateral FTA talks involving Australia, the United States and seven other Asia-Pacific economies. Japan has held 11 rounds of FTA talks with Australia, a major farm exporter, since April 2007. But heavy protection of Japan's sensitive agricultural products such as dairy items, beef, wheat and sugar have helped stall the negotiations. Apart from economical topics, Japanese Foreign Minister will push security agenda as well. In May, the two countries signed a defence logistics accord that enables their military forces to share fuel and other supplies during operations.
