This should have marked a significant moment—the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the EU—but the talks were noticeably tense. What’s particularly telling is the stark contrast between Chinese state media reports and the EU’s press releases and briefings. The official Chinese communiqués were filled with formulaic expressions like “Comrade Xi Jinping pointed out” and “Xi Jinping emphasized,” verbose and vacuous, bordering on soporific. It gave the impression that the two European leaders had come all the way to Beijing merely to sit through a lecture from Chairman Xi.
