The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) will elect its new leadership at its 18th National Elective Congress underway at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre in Boksburg East of Johannesburg. The three day Congress is organized under the theme: The Epoch For The Dictatorship of The Proletariat Now or Never. NUM has about 200 000 members in mining, energy, automotive and metal sectors. The union says it's members are facing low wages, geopolitics, retrenchments and losses of lives in mining. Outgoing NUM President Daniel Balepile will be standing for the position again, expected to go against his deputy Phillip Vilakazi.
