I try to keep it positive here guys, but every now and then I have to look at songs and artists from a different perspective. And the truth is even the greatest artists can write a stinker. So today we venture into the age-old conundrum... When Bad Songs happen to great artists. And you’re going to have a heyday here. Including a Paul McCartney song that is so annoying that it causes angry convulsions. Another by Heart that they erased from their history. One that was written for Celine Dion and then given to Aerosmith and it became their biggest hit ever. And another that tries so hard to be deep it’s boring. We’re gonna push the envelope a bit on this episode, with a thought-provoking list of '5 Bad Songs by Great Artists’ NEXT…on Professor of Rock. That all too familiar curse. When Bad songs happen to great artists. It happens to the best of the best and I want to hear your picks below. I’ve been thinking about this for a bit but I had to wait a little bit because one of them is a seasonal song. You’ll see what I mean in the countdown. Let’s get into it. Coming in at #5 on our list… I’ve got the bad boys of boston with a song that thankfully they didn’t write but the cheese fest became their biggest hit ever. It’s “Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” BY AEROSMITH:This sickly sweet power ballad was written by prolific lyricist Diane Warren. Diane originally imagined someone like Celine Dion would sing her composition. A singer like Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler was the furthest thing from her mind. She came up with the idea for the song while watching a TV interview in ‘97 with James Brolin and Barbra Streisand. During the interview, James, said he “missed Barbra when they were sleeping,” which triggered the phrase… “I don’t want to miss a thing.” As Diane developed the lyrics for the song, she came up with lines that she later admitted she found silly, such as the line “I can stay awake, just to hear you breathing,” and The demo of the song was just some singing to a piano melody. It was not even close to a rock ballad. When Steven & Aerosmith were approached to perform the song for the Armageddon movie soundtrack, Diane sat down at a piano with Steven inside a suite at the Sunset Marquis hotel in West Hollywood. While teaching Steven the song, she remembered getting goose bumps as Steven began to get familiar with the spirt of her song, and surprised her with how natural it was for him.
