See more instructional videos at http://easylinkedintraining.com/ It might be obvious, but the first step is to Complete your profile so the recruiter can get an accurate picture of who you are and what you are good at. What might not be so obvious is that it's very important to include key words in your professional summary and job descriptions to help recruiters find you on Linked In. When recruiters use Linked In's advanced search feature, they look for profiles with certain words that describe the candidate they are looking for. If your profile does not contain the key words, you are not likely to show up. So, when writing your profile, be sure to include key words and phrases that are relative to your experience and industry. Try doing a search to see if your profile appears when you look for certain for key words in your location and industry. If you're not showing up, chances are recruiters will have a hard time finding you. You can make yourself 'searchable' on both Linked In and Google by creating a public profile. You don't have to make your entire profile public. Linked In offers various options for you to ensure you can protect your privacy. We suggest however that your professional photo, headline and summary are made public. 1. Recruiters spend an average of 10-20 seconds looking at each profile on Linked In. They first look at your profile picture to see if you present well and then at your education, experience, current and past titles. They skim your summary and skills to determine if you might be a good fit for the job they are trying to fill for their client. Make sure your profile tells a good story. When writing your profile, make sure you are writing it for the job you want, not telling your professional life story. You don't have to include every job you've ever had in your Linked In profile. Keep it targeted and relevant to the job you are looking for. 2. Next, make sure you have a few recommendations in your profile. Having at least three jobs in your profile with details about your responsibilities and accomplishments, as well as recommendations will make you very attractive to recruiters. In our beyond basics class, we tell you the types of recommendations you should be asking for, how to ask for them, and how these recommendations should be worded. Recommendations increase your credibility and your chances of going to the top of a recruiters list of candidates to call. 3. Include your contact information in your public profile. It is easier for people to reach out to you if they can find your contact information in your public profile. Including your phone number or email in your summary, for example, is a good way to help make it easy for recruiters to contact you. 4. Another important thing you need to do is change your contact settings. At the bottom of your profile, you'll see contact settings that indicate whether or not you are open to receiving communications about job opportunities. It's important to indicate 'yes' as it effectively gives recruiters the green light to call you. 5. When a recruiter connects with you, they are highly likely to look through your contacts for two reasons. 1. To see if there is anyone in your contacts that they might be able to fit for a job, including the one they had in mind for you and 2. To see who you are connected to. If your connections are industry peers, past colleagues, ex-bosses and the like, this will indicate to them that you are good at professional networking and building relationships, and likely to be well-respected in your field. If your network is full of people whose jobs are outside of your industry and more likely to be 'friends' than professional associates, this may indicate to them that you are either not very good at professional networking, not well-respected, or very junior. 6. Group participation in an industry group is also a good indication to recruiters that you are a contributor. Recruiters often join industry groups to scout good candidates. If you want to stand out, join and get active in groups!
