Founded around 1213 as a wooden chapel, it was consecrated in 1306 by the Bishop of Utrecht and dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. Its wooden vault ceiling, built around 1390 from Estonian oak, is the largest medieval wooden vault in Europe. The floor is paved with roughly 2,500 gravestones beneath which approximately 60,000 Amsterdam citizens are buried, including Saskia van Uylenburgh β Rembrandt's wife β who was laid to rest here in 1642.
