I worked for nine years at one facility and then four years at a subsequent one. Most of us physicians who learn about locums, start doing locums in a hybrid manner where we work on our off weeks, and that’s exactly what I did. It took me perhaps about seven months to realize that I could have the constancy that I depended on as a permanent hospitalist and that could in fact continue to work exclusively locums, and I’ve been in that capacity now for two full years. My locums experience is and has been unique since the beginning of my engagement because of the fact that I don’t travel outside of the state that I live in. I work at approximately ten different institutions, and I sleep in my own bed every night. I like working full-time locums because I can extend the flexibility that locums is known for across my entire year, in my entire career, and at the same time also be able to reach out and, instead of helping an institution, work in multiple institutions and address them in some of their highest moments of need. I find that very edifying.
