Kennedy, Jr., (I) Presidential Candidate: “I'm so proud to introduce to you the next Vice President of the United States, my fellow lawyer, a brilliant scientist, technologies a fierce warrior mom, Nicole Shanahan.” 2. Kennedy and Shanahan on stage together ++PARTIALLY COVERED++ 3. SOUNDBITE (English) Jonathan J. Cooper, Associated Press: “Independent presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy, Jr. introduced his vice presidential running mate today. It’s Nicole Shanahan. She's 38 years old, new to politics, has never run for office before. She's a lawyer in Silicon Valley, formerly married to the co-founder of Google, Sergey Brin. So she has a lot of money.” 4. She's been a Democrat all of her life. But she left the party and is joining Kennedy's independent campaign because she feels like the Democratic Party is too beholden to corporate interests. That's a sentiment that has been central to the Kennedy campaign. And she sort of shared his rhetoric about the Democrats and the Republicans, being not especially different from one another.” 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Jonathan J. Cooper, Associated Press: “The Kennedy-Shanahan tickets very much trying to draw from both sides of the aisle. There's not a lot of good data to know at this point where exactly his support is coming from, if it would hurt Trump or Biden more than the other. But both parties are concerned, you know the pro-Trump Super PAC released a statement attacking Bobby Kennedy today and the Democratic National Committee is doing the same.” 8. Nicole Shanahan, Jacob Strumwasser , Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and Cheryl Hines on stage ++PARTIALLY COVERED++ 9. SOUNDBITE (English) Jonathan J. Cooper, Associated Press: “Third party candidates face extremely long odds to be elected president in the United States, just the way the system is set up. As a very threshold issue it's very hard for them to get on the ballot. In all 50 states, the requirements are very intense. That's one way where Shanahan's wealth can be extremely helpful to the campaign. She can give unlimited sums to the campaign now that she's a candidate. And that can help them with the very expensive task.” ++ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++ STORYLINE: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has chosen Nicole Shanahan to be his vice presidential pick.   Kennedy is mounting an independent White House bid that has spooked national Democrats.   Shanahan is a California lawyer and philanthropist who’s never held elected office.   Associated Press reporter Jonathan J. Cooper was at the announcement and said that Shanahan’s wealth could help the campaign.   “She's 38 years old, new to politics, has never run for office before. She's a lawyer in Silicon Valley, formerly married to the co-founder of Google, Sergey Brin. So she has a lot of money,” Cooper said.   Kennedy, a former Democrat, made the announcement in Oakland, California.   Without the backing of a party, Kennedy faces an arduous task to get on the ballot, with varying rules across the 50 states.     Kennedy is picking a running mate now because about half of the states require him to designate one before he can apply for ballot access.   =========================================================== Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: https://twitter.com/AP_Archive Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/APArchives Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/APNews/ You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/d1f2ea5cfcf0439799f2f03912031fc0
