To see if it’s worth it to buy a pass or just single tickets, the first step is to determine if which countries you want to visit, so for me, that was Italy and Austria, and then to list out the cities you’ll be visiting. For us, we had 7 cities in mind so that means, we’ll need at least 6 travelling days. The next step is to see how much a single ticket would cost to get from those cities to the next. One useful site I came across is Rick Steve’e Europe site which has a page that shows maps of the European countries and the cost of a ticket between each city so if I scroll down to Italy for instance, from Rome to Florence, it’ll cost me $50USD. I did the same procedure for all the other cities and it came up to a total of $355 if I buy single tickets. So now, I have to go back to the Eurail website to see how much it would cost. So since I’m going to 2 countries, I’ll have to get the Select Pass and then find the Austria-Italy Pass. If you look at their Standard Prices which is what they have throughout the year, it comes up to $371 for 6 days which is more than the single tickets. But one cool thing about Eurail is that if you’re travelling with someone, you can save 15%, which means it’s $318 instead. Another cool thing is Eurail often has promotions where they give you free travel days so if we click on that, we’ll be choosing the 5 days instead and it’ll cost $336. But if you travel together and get the 15% discount, it’ll cost only $287! So I did a little summary table for you. If you get the promotion and the 15% discount from travelling together, you’ll save $68 for this itinerary! It was definitely worth it for my trip but it might not be the case for you so hopefully this will be useful and it’ll help you decide if you should buy a Eurail pass or not.
