In 2018 there was a devastating Red Tide event that raged along the coast of southwest Florida. It was one of the most prolonged and severe fish kill events in recent history. This toxic tide ravaged multiple counties and miles of coastline, causing mass fish deaths and decimating other wildlife including birds, sea turtles, manatees, and dolphins. At the time, our scuba diving team investigated a reef offshore Collier County to examine the impacts. Unfortunately, we found a seafloor covered in dead marine organisms. Recently we decided to revisit the same artificial reef to observe if there has been any recovery since the mass die off. This video shows what we witnessed underwater both several years ago, during the harmful algae event, and while conducting our recent investigation. 00:00 = Joe Kistel discusses the fish kill event 00:20 = Dive showing the reef devastated from the harmful algae bloom 00:45 = Why did all the sea life perish? 01:45 = Dive showing underwater views of the same reef now Dive support and special thanks: Chris Darco and crew of Collier County Katie Laakkonen of the City of Naples Host and Underwater Cameraman Joe Kistel Produced by Kistel Media #florida #ocean #redtide
