From the article by Bella Todd published 07.01.2019: "Spring 2019 will see the release, on Astigmatic Records, of one of the most hotly anticipated albums from the super-fertile London jazz scene.Cykada comprises members of the boundary-pushing outfits Ezra Collective, Maisha, Undergrooveland, Myriad Forest, LAB Collective and Don Kipper, and recorded their forthcoming debut record at North London’s Total Refreshment Centre, hub of the UK capital’s flourishing jazz scene. What they bring to the already creaking table is a total commitment to unfettered exploration, aided by the sonic twists and turns of live programming. "Cykada were founded on the principle that the people who make the music should come first, and the project’s sonic identity should follow after." Bassist Jamie Benzies and electronics wiz Tilé Gichigi-Lipere were old band-mates from space-jazz experimenters Myriad Forest. Together, they hooked up with percussionist Tim Doyle (aka Chiminyo), known for his experiments with sound-triggering drum set-ups. And they also invited in a saxophonist, trumpeter and guitarist. "This group's purpose was simply to jam and play with influences from West Africa to Eastern Europe, jazz to sound-system culture, churning them up spontaneously. Just to add an extra layer of unpredictability to proceedings, Tilé programmes, processes and modifies the sounds of the instruments as they go." The result is a cutting-edge mix of live and electronic music, from a band whose special covers set for Jazz Café last year was a tribute to LA-based beatmakers including Flying Lotus, Mndsgn and Teebs."
