Visit famous Danes such as the fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen, the philosopher Søren Kierkegaard and scientist Niels Bohr - they rest in the beautiful Assistens Cemetery in the district of cool Nørrebro. Constructed in 1760 because old walled-in Copenhagen needed graveyard space for its deceased citizens, the cemetery was placed outside the city walls. The cemetery today is half graveyard, half a green city park, where grieving families blend with joggers, cyclists, and locals hanging out, became part of the city as Copenhagen grew and is today an essential part of the cool and diverse neighbourhood of Nørrebro.
