This is the first in a new series I'm creating all about...pattern fitting and adjusting standard sewing patterns to fit our unique bodies! So, we're starting at the very, very beginning with how to measure yourself with three foundational measurements: bust, waist, and hips. To get started: Wear the undergarments you plan to wear with the garment you're making...for me, this is my everyday bra :-) Use a mirror if you're solo and use a soft tape measure. For the bust: wrap your tape measure around the fullest part of your bustline. Take a breath and that is your bust measurement to use. For your waist: tip your body to one side and where you find the natural crease - that's where to place your tape measure. For your hips: wrap the tape measure around the most protruding part of your bum/hip area. Make sure the tape measure stays parallel to the floor (can be a bit tricky but use the mirror to be sure) and there are no twists in the tape measure. Sewing our own clothes allows us to make and wear whatever we can dream up, but if we don't know how to adjust the pattern to fit our unique body…well, that dreamy garment just isn't a reality. What fit issues have you encountered in your sewing? I may be able to help! Feel free to share below!
