Walk around the most talked-about semi-truck of our times. Tesla Semi, a Class 8 heavy-duty truck, was outlined in Elon Musk’s Master Plan, Part Deux, in 2016 and unveiled in November 2017. As tractor-trailer trucks currently account for approximately 18 percent of vehicle emissions, Semi offers a chance for Tesla to further its climate-focused mission while capturing a new market. With two battery pack configurations, Semi will be able to achieve 300 or 500 miles of range on a single charge. The vehicle is equipped with three independent electric motors on the rear axles and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 20 seconds, fully loaded, with a gross combined weight of 82,000 lbs. Tesla’s Semi prototype achieved a drag coefficient of a mere 0.36, far less than the 0.65-0.70 of a traditional semi-truck. Since its introduction, Tesla has been refining Semi for the mass market.
