The "Protecting Our Future: An Introduction to Cultural Heritage" classes were held live via Zoom in January 2023 by Professor Valerie Higgins of the MA in Cultural Heritage program at The American University of Rome. Using a combination of presentations, discussions, and conversations with various heritage professionals, we explored the roles played by different types of heritage professionals as they confront the challenges of preserving our natural and cultural heritage for future generations. CLASS #.4 CULTURAL HERITAGE AND TOURISM. Cultural heritage sites now have more visitors than they have ever had. Heritage sites initially welcomed the increased revenue, but as visitor numbers continued to rise beyond sustainable numbers, what was seen as a boon became an uncontrollable disaster. How can we develop sustainable tourism? Does the Covid pandemic allow us to reset the clock? What lessons can the rest of the world learn from the example of Venice?
