Rare Lady Amherst's pheasant which is believed to be extinct in the wild in Britain A rare exotic bird which was believed to be extinct in the British wild has been caught on camera wandering around a garden in St Andrews. The Lady Amherst's pheasant was introduced to the UK from China in the 19th Century and there have been no reported sightings of the bird since 2019. But student Sophie Pearson, 23, was stunned when she saw the creature strut past her window in Fife, Scotland The birds are named after Sarah Countess Amherst who sent the first specimen back to London in 1828. Lady Amherst first introduced the ornamental pheasant on her estates, near the Duke of Bedford's Woburn Abbey. The tails on the adult males are around 80cm long, and they are said to roost in trees at night.
