And they can be a good investment if you are seeking a steady rate of interest payments over 20 to 30 years. The only way you could lose your investment would be if the U.S government were to default or if you were to sell off your bond before its maturity since the selling price could be lower than the purchase price. Bond yields are also relatively high now, and therefore, have the potential to generate returns over the long term. But also take note, when you purchase a Treasury bond, the fixed rate of interest for that bond never changes, regardless of where market interest rates are trading.
