There are several vaccines recommended for adults and older adolescents, according to Bethany Panchal, MD, a Family Medicine physician for Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center. For adults, this includes a Tdap booster for Tetanus, Pertussis and Diphtheria, if one has not been received within the last ten years, a pneumonia vaccine for older adults and an annual flu shot for everyone. Dr. Panchal says adolescents should also get the Gardasil or HPV vaccine, which is a series of three shots that can be given starting at age 9, but is more typically started at age 11 or 12, all the way up to age 24. An additional immunization recommended for adolescents is for meningitis.
