This year's program took place in 300 cities, one of which was Cape Town. I visited the Cause Effect Cocktail Kitchen on May 22, 2019, to explain the ten-year program of research toward early detection of colon cancer in which I participated at my prior university home in the United States. What are clinical biomarkers, and why are they so challenging to develop? I framed the discussion in the context of a person's fiftieth birthday, when he or she is faced with a wide variety of medical checks that would generally not have been necessary in younger patients.
