But I was surprised by it and, in my opinion, I think we should be careful when listening to it. Why should we be careful with following this advice about "How much do I need to retire?" Here are 3 reasons for my opinion; 1.This advice forgets about the Sequence of Return Risk. A person who retires in 2007 right before the financial crisis has a much different long term outcome than someone who retired in 2002 2.This advice seems to assume you will get a 12% return. My guess is that you'd have to be comfortable with the majority of your portfolio invested very aggressively in order to achieve that sort of return. If you're like most of our clients, you might not want to be 100% invested in aggressive investments. Sometimes you want some shock absorbers in there for bad market periods.
