What societal responsibility do corporations have? In the midst of great social upheaval, business leaders and elected officials are grappling with a public reassessment of business’ role in American life. While many corporate heads have tried to offer a path forward, few are as compelling as that of Whole Foods Market Cofounder and CEO John Mackey. Mr. Mackey’s new book, “Conscious Leadership: Elevating Humanity Through Business” (Penguin Random House, 2020), is a follow-up to his bestseller “Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business” (Harvard Business Review Press, 2013).
